Maputo National Park
Tour Overview
This is a rugged, full-day 4x4 adventure lasting approximately 9 to 10 hours. The park is located about 70km south of Maputo, but the sandy terrain requires specialized off-road vehicles and a slow pace. The drive from the city includes crossing the Maputo-Katembe Bridge—the longest suspension bridge in Africa—providing a dramatic start to the day. The itinerary balances inland game viewing through lagoons and plains with a relaxing break at the coast.
Tour Highlights
The Elephant Plains: Searching for the park’s famous elephant herds, which are known for their impressive size and seasonal migrations between the freshwater lagoons.
Lagoon Birdwatching: Visiting massive inland lakes like Lagoa Piti, home to hippos, crocodiles, and a spectacular array of birdlife including flamingos and fish eagles.
4x4 Dune Navigation: Experience the thrill of navigating high coastal dunes that offer panoramic views of the turquoise ocean.
Ponta de Ouro or Ponta Abril: A stop at the coastline for a picnic or a swim in the warm Indian Ocean waters, often seeing dolphins or whales (seasonally) from the shore.
